Dying clip in hair extensions is an excellent way to refresh your old hairpieces with a new shade. However, not every type of clip-in hair extension can be used for the coloring process. So, can you dye clip on hair extensions and how to do it properly?

That means clip in hair extensions that you can dye are those made from remy hair and virgin hair. Although there are several tips to dye synthetic fibers on the internet, the outcome is not as nice as the original look. Plus, you will need special ways to do it since synthetic hair does not absorb normal hair dye. So, in short, coloring clip in hair extensions is possible, but we recommend you use remy hair and virgin hair for the color-changing procedure.
Since not everybody’s hair is the same, the ability to endure chemicals also varies. Thin and soft hair strands are easier to absorb hair dye and developer, but they’re also easier to damage after the bleaching process. That means you will need more care after lightening them. Whereas, people with strong, large and round hair strands tend to be less damaged by the harsh chemicals. This absence makes them more prone to dryness and breakage when exposed to harsh chemicals present in hair dyes. Therefore, frequent dyeing can strip your hair extensions of their natural moisture. This eventually damages the hair and shortens its lifespan.

Before you start dying clip in hair extensions, let’s decide on the shade you want to change with your clip-in hair extensions. Then, select a proper developer line. If you want to go with a demi-permanent color, use a 10-volume developer while a 20-volume developer will give 1-2 levels of lift when used with permanent hair color. If you want to bleach your hair and opt for light shades like blonde or platinum, choose 30-and 40-volume developers.
After that, prepare the other needed tools. You will need:
Cover the area where you’ll be dyeing your clip-in hair extensions with an old towel or cloth to protect surfaces from any potential dye stains. Then, mix the hair dye by following the instructions of the manufacturer. Normally, you can mix the hair dye and the developer in a ratio of 1:1. Use a plastic bowl and an applicator brush or comb to achieve a consistent mixture.
Some experts recommend washing the clip-in hair extensions with a mild shampoo before dyeing to remove any product buildup. However, this step is optional.
Lay your clip-in hair extensions over the working space. Then, wear your plastic gloves. Use a color brush to completely saturate each section of your hair extensions with the hair dye. You need to start at the top of the hairpiece (where the clips are attached) and move downward to the ends, following the natural fall of the hair. If you apply the color upwards, you may damage your hair extensions and will absolutely leave them frizzy and disheveled.
Make sure to apply the hair dye evenly, covering both the top and underside of the wefts.
After applying the dye, loosely wrap each section of the hair extensions in plastic wrap or tint foil. This helps to prevent the color from drying out before it soaks in, intensify the color and keep the dye from transferring to other sections.
And now, let’s wait for about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the instructions from the manufacturer. During this processing time, you need to check the hair every 5 to 10 minutes by gently rubbing the color off the extension with a paper towel. After checking, reapply the hair dye to the section.
Once the desired color is achieved, carefully remove the plastic wrap or foil and rinse the hair extensions under cool water until the water runs clear. A thorough rinsing takes around 15 minutes. If you are not sure to remove all the hair dye, rinse once again.
After that, use a mild, sulfate-free and color-safe shampoo to wash your hair extensions, and follow up with a conditioner to restore moisture.
Gently pat your clip-in hair extensions with a towel to remove excess water, and use a wide-tooth comb to gently comb out the hair. Then, lay them flat on a clean towel to air dry. Avoid using heat tools immediately after dyeing to prevent additional stress on the hair.
